Freeze the search inputs
Before comparing platforms, use one set of dates, the same number of rooms and the same adults and children, including children’s ages. Confirm the property address: similar hotel names and different branches can produce a misleading bargain. Set one currency for comparison, but separately note the currency that will actually be charged.
Create a short record for each offer: property; room name; stay dates; guests; bed; meals; final total; payment date; cancellation deadline; exclusions. Save the checkout screen, not only the search result. A changing search result is not evidence that the price remained available when you booked.
Match the physical room
“Standard,” “superior” and “deluxe” are not universal room standards. Compare the hotel’s own room descriptions with the booking option: bed arrangement, floor area, window or view category, smoking policy and maximum occupancy. A requested twin setup is not the same as a guaranteed twin room.
For a concrete example, Grand Hyatt Incheon’s official FAQ distinguishes standard occupancy from maximum occupancy and says extra beds are available only in selected room types. That is why “sleeps three” should trigger a question about the third person’s bedding and charge. Apply that check to your chosen hotel; do not transfer one property’s policy to all Korea hotels.
Ask who gets breakfast
A breakfast label is incomplete without the number of people and mornings covered. Ask whether children are included, whether a restaurant breakfast or lounge breakfast is offered, and whether an early departure makes the benefit unusable. If you prefer neighborhood cafés, treat breakfast as optional rather than automatically adding its advertised value.
Keep these questions together: “Is breakfast included for every registered guest on every morning of this stay? Are there additional child charges? What are the serving hours?” Save the reply when the listing is unclear. A breakfast package you cannot use is not necessarily a better deal.
Calculate a useful total
Use: full-stay room charge + excluded mandatory taxes or fees + necessary guest or bed charges + chosen meals + payment costs you can identify. Do not add tax again if the final screen already includes it. Keep a refundable incidental deposit separate from the accommodation cost, while allowing for the funds it may temporarily tie up.
Illustrative arithmetic, not a live quote: Offer A is KRW 360,000 for three nights without breakfast. Breakfast you choose to buy costs KRW 20,000 per person per morning; two people eating on three mornings add KRW 120,000, making KRW 480,000. Offer B is KRW 450,000 for the same room and includes both guests’ breakfast. B is KRW 30,000 lower on that basis. If you skip hotel breakfast, A is lower.
Price flexibility separately
Do not compare a non-refundable price as though it carried the same protection as a cancellable booking. Record the exact cancellation cutoff, stated timezone, penalty after the cutoff and any no-show charge. Put the deadline in your calendar with a reminder before it, and retain the confirmation wording.
Illustrative decision: paying KRW 30,000 more for a cancellable booking buys flexibility; it is not automatically a saving. If your flight dates are unsettled, that flexibility may matter more than the smaller room price. If your itinerary is firm, you may deliberately choose the stricter rate after reading its terms. No universal platform-wide refund rule replaces the booked rate’s conditions.
Pay now and pay later have different questions
Check who collects the payment, when it happens and in which currency. “Pay later” does not automatically mean no card hold, no prepayment or free cancellation. Ask your card issuer about foreign-currency charges if they affect the comparison; do not guess a fee or exchange rate.
For a direct hotel offer, also confirm whether the advertised member rate requires joining a program and whether its stated benefits apply to that specific rate. For a third-party offer, keep support and cancellation instructions from that booking channel. The useful winner is the lowest suitable total under conditions you understand.
Refund deadline and check-in deposit are separate checks
Save the cancellation cutoff exactly as shown, including date, time and timezone. “Free cancellation” is incomplete without its deadline. Ask the booking provider how a change affects that condition before replacing a reservation. Do not cancel a useful room until the replacement is confirmed.
A prepaid room can still need an incidental deposit. For example, Grand Hyatt Incheon’s FAQ requires a credit card or cash deposit at check-in. Ask your actual property about accepted payment, deposit amount and release process. Do not treat a deposit hold as included spending or assume a room prepayment removes it.
