This is an editorial comparison of trip styles, not a scored ranking. Do not choose based on reputation alone. Choose based on where your evenings end.
Myeongdong: the easiest all-rounder
Myeongdong remains strongly oriented toward visitors, with fashion and beauty shops concentrated in the area. Seoul’s official guide continues to identify it as one of the city’s major shopping districts.
That makes it a useful starting shortlist for travellers who are still unsure how their itinerary will develop.
Choose Myeongdong when:
- this is your first Seoul trip,
- Korean cosmetics are a priority,
- you want to mix shopping with central sightseeing,
- you prefer convenience over nightlife.
Do not choose it automatically if most of your trip is in Seongsu, Jamsil, Gangnam or Apgujeong.
Hongdae: the strongest choice for evenings
Hongdae is built around a different travel rhythm. Official Seoul tourism material emphasizes its music, art and nightlife culture, making it a useful candidate for travellers who do not want the day to end after sightseeing.
Choose Hongdae when:
- you like street fashion and independent shops,
- cafés and bars matter,
- you prefer a younger atmosphere,
- you expect to return late.
The biggest booking check is noise. A hotel five minutes from the action may be ideal at 8 p.m. and less ideal at 1 a.m.
Gangnam: best when the itinerary is already there
Gangnam is not one single shopping street. Staying there makes most sense when your plans repeatedly bring you south of the Han River.
Gangnam Station itself has an underground shopping area with fashion and cosmetics. COEX, Apgujeong and Cheongdam are separate destinations: compare the exact hotel-to-destination journey rather than assuming all are nearby.
Choose Gangnam when:
- Apgujeong or Cheongdam is important,
- COEX or Jamsil appears in your itinerary,
- southern Seoul dining or beauty appointments are a priority,
- you prefer a more business-district atmosphere.
If your must-sees are Bukchon, Gyeongbokgung, Myeongdong and Dongdaemun, calculate the repeated travel before booking.
Which one would we choose?
For a first shopping-focused Seoul trip, our default shortlist is:
- Myeongdong for convenience.
- Hongdae for energy.
- Gangnam for a south-Seoul itinerary.
A cheaper hotel in the wrong district can cost you more in time and taxis than a slightly more expensive room in the area you actually use. Compare your own routes and costs; this is not a guaranteed saving.
One mistake to avoid
Do not search only “best hotel in Seoul.” Search “best area for my Seoul itinerary.” Then compare hotels inside that area.
Ask the hotel these questions before a non-refundable booking
Send the exact room name and dates: “Which station exit and walking route do you recommend with two suitcases? Is there lift access from the street to this room? Does this room face a nightlife street? If we arrive after midnight, what do we need to do?” A useful answer should concern the booked category, not just the building.
If noise is your main concern, a higher floor alone is not a guarantee. Ask about the room’s orientation and read recent reviews for the same room or side where possible. If the property cannot answer a decisive access question, keep another candidate on the shortlist.
