Quick comparison
| Arrival | Best fit | Ground-transport starting point | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incheon, ICN | Seoul first | AREX toward Seoul or airport buses | Terminal, last onward service, hotel location |
| Gimhae, PUS | Busan first | Busan–Gimhae Light Rail | Sasang or Daejeo transfer, final hotel walk |
| Different arrival/departure cities | Seoul + Busan, one-way city order | One intercity move rather than returning to the first city | Multi-city fare, luggage and departure timing |
Use your first two nights as the filter
Write down where you want to sleep on nights one and two. If both are in Seoul, an inexpensive flight to Busan comes with a second journey before your trip has really started. If both are in Busan, landing at Incheon adds the reverse problem.
Our editorial choice for a short trip is to prioritise the first city when fares are reasonably close. For three nights in Busan, Gimhae is the more practical shortlist starting point. For three nights in Seoul, start with Incheon. This is itinerary advice, not a claim that either airport always has the cheaper flight.
What happens after landing
Incheon’s AREX Express reaches Seoul Station in about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 or 51 minutes from Terminal 2. These are train times, excluding immigration, waiting and the trip to your hotel. For Hongdae, the All-Stop service is worth comparing because it stops at Hongik University.
From Gimhae, take the light rail from Airport Station and transfer at Sasang for Busan Metro Line 2, or Daejeo for Line 3. Save the hotel’s Korean address and route before departure. A map pin near the beach does not tell you how far you will carry luggage from the station.
Seoul + Busan: compare the city order
Price three complete options: return via ICN, return via PUS, and a multi-city journey into one airport and out of the other. Add the intercity ticket, any extra hotel night and the transfer on departure day. Use the flight comparison checklist to keep baggage and conditions consistent.
Illustrative budget: a multi-city fare is ₩60,000 higher, but avoids a ₩70,000 return-to-origin journey. It is ₩10,000 cheaper before counting the time saved. Those figures are an example, not current KTX or airline prices. Price the actual date and route before choosing.
Do not confuse Gimpo and Gimhae
GMP is Gimpo, in the Seoul area. PUS is Gimhae, serving Busan. If a connection requires you to move from ICN to GMP, it is an airport change. Treat the landside transfer, baggage collection and onward check-in as separate tasks. Do not use a same-terminal connection time as your planning allowance.
Check whether an Incheon–Busan segment is a transit-exclusive domestic service with eligibility conditions. A flight displayed in a connecting itinerary is not automatically a domestic ticket anyone can book on its own; confirm the exact arrangement with the airline.
Before you book
- Confirm airport codes on every segment, including the return.
- Choose the first hotel area before calculating the ground journey.
- Check local arrival dates; an overnight flight can land the next day.
- Check the final service to your destination after baggage collection.
- For different entry and exit cities, price the complete multi-city itinerary.
- Keep departure-day travel conservative if intercity transport is independently booked.
An open-jaw ticket: calculate the break-even premium
Illustrative totals for two travellers, not current fares: flying into Seoul and out of Busan costs ₩80,000 more per person than a Seoul return ticket, a ₩160,000 premium. If avoiding the return to Seoul saves ₩120,000 in intercity tickets and ₩40,000 in additional local transfers, the cash comparison breaks even before valuing time.
Count a hotel night only if it actually changes between the alternatives. Also check the departure airport, airline schedule and connection arrangement on the final ticket. An itinerary that avoids backtracking is useful only if the flight itself works for your dates.
